Home has always been my place of zen, be it after a long day at work, or just to escape the societal buzz of “going-out”. However, it often felt less like a place of zen and more like a nightmare coming to life with, never-ending chores, clothes spread around like an exhibition of an extravagantly mediocre wardrobe, and piles of mess everywhere.
We are the ones responsible for cultivating a healthy physical environment by eating properly, moving our bodies, stimulating our minds, soaking in positivity, and developing our inner fire. Similarly, we are the ones responsible for creating a safe space in which to rest these lovely temples that are our bodies.
It wasn’t until I made a few changes to my home that helped me add a touch of serenity and where I could be at peace away from the hustle of the city. To help you do the same here are few simple and sparing ways to add serenity to your sweet abode.
Motivation & Scenic Posters/Wall Art.
One of the simplest things you can do is decorate your walls with posters with motivational quotes or picturesque view of nature. Make sure to use posters with soft colors, to help you relax and calm down after a stressful day while being a welcoming sight.
De-clutter Your Surroundings.
Clutter produces physical and unconscious chaos. Not only can it leave you scrambling to find the keys as you are racing out the door but it can weigh on you even when you are sitting at your desk 20 miles away. Put a plan in place. Whether it’s ready to burst from behind closet doors or it’s those piles of paper on the dining room table, it is time to tackle the tasks and tame the tension it creates. To help you further, here are 12 DIY hacks to help you organize and de-clutter your home.
Dim Lamps & Candles.
Avoid the glare of overhead lighting by using tabletop and floor lamps with soft bulbs. Install dimmers wherever possible. Place a scented candle in the room or a tableau of several candles in an appropriate spot set the mood.
Soft Fabric Rugs.
You probably never even noticed a spa’s greatest trick for creating a calming environment. Soft fabrics, like mohair, help keep sounds from echoing. White sheepskin throws, rugs and covered pillows are sure to add a sense of calmness and serenity to your home.
Many world class hotels commission a custom scent for their rooms, which provides a distinct smell to its visitors. Making them familiar enough to comfort guests, and distinctive enough that they’ll associate it only with the hotel. Similarly, having a nontraditional scent that reminds you of your home—and only your home—can help you leave work, traffic jams and that rude woman at the grocery store behind as soon as you walk through the door.
Soft Wall Paint.
A monochromatic color scheme allows your eye to pass over furnishings and art. For a soothing look, use earth tones or dusty colors that don’t glare. Paint walls a pale, pale pink for a restful environment, or light marigold that reflects the warmth of the sun. Fabric color choices include white and linen, beige and latte, sage and dusty lavender, making the color distinctions minimal. Avoid contrasting colors.
Nature & Handmade Artifacts.
Accessorize with items from nature, like a piece of driftwood, a rock or geological specimen from a special place, or seashells. Keep them to a minimum so as not to add to the clutter, but place them in an area where they contribute to the decor. Choose artwork pale in color that depicts restful topics. Nature, the seashore, impressionistic flowers and monochromatic modern art all contribute to your home’s serenity.
Add A Little Greenery.
Plants are important for many reasons, not only is it an additional way to bring nature into your home, it also helps to clean and re-oxygenate the indoor air. Incorporating plants into your design will help to eliminate the noxious off-gasses from many products giving you a serene sigh of relief.
