Every year April 22nd is celebrated as Earth Day across the world. Google too joined the movement with its special Earth Day doodle. It is obvious that the rampant human driven “development” is taking a huge toll on our environment. The scorching heat in Bangalore, which is as high as 40 “C, is just one example of climate change rearing its ugly head.
Human beings are the most evolved and yet the most stupid species on the planet. Our greed knows no bounds. In the pursuit of development, we find ourselves at a crossroads. We must either choose to reverse the effects of climate change or deprive future generations of this wonderful gift called nature. Which path would you choose?
The gifts of nature are plenty but collectively we are responsible for the extinction of about 99.99% of species. Biologists predict that we are nearing one more cycle of mass extinction. You might wonder, that you as an individual, have never cut a tree or killed a tiger. How could you be responsible? Well, think about all the plastic, paper and fuel that you consume daily. The solution to the present environmental crisis lies in our hands. The sooner each individual is aware of ways in which he or she can help save this planet, the better, easier and more effectively can we resolve this crisis.
Here are 5 simple habits that you and I can inculcate which will help in saving our planet:
1. Say NO to plastic
Plastic alone contributes about 10% of the waste that is generated. It is practically non-biodegradable and is much more harmful than we can imagine. Stop using plastic wherever possible. Always carry a jute or cotton carry bag to the supermarket. These bags can be used multiple times and are eco-friendly.
2. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
This is the apt mantra to go green. At home or at office try to implement this in as many ways as possible. A few handy examples – print on both sides of the paper, use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins, use coffee mugs instead of paper mugs.
3. Save Energy
Turn off appliances when not in use. They consume a lot of energy which goes unutilised.
4. Save water
Each drop of water matters, hence please fix those water pipes and taps that keep leaking. While washing your vehicles use a bucket of water instead of a water pipe. We know it is a little extra effort, but it really is worth it.
Use carpool services or offer a ride to your colleague/friend while commuting. This takes away the extra vehicles on the road and you also save up on your money.
6. Learn more and spread awareness
Learn more ways in which you can help in saving the planet and educate people around you. Stop people from being careless and pursue them to join you in the movement.
These tips are just a starting point. There are many other ways in which you can help save the environment. If you know of other tips, please comment below and help spread the awareness!
Sharing Economy Is Eco-Friendly
Anders Fremstad of the Colorado State University said, “There is significant environmental benefit to increasing the use of existing goods and reducing the demand for new goods.”
At GrabOnRent, we strive hard to enable the sharing economy among the masses. Renting furniture and home appliances, especially when you are in a particular place for an uncertain time or a short duration, is a better option than buying them. Not only does this save your money, but it is also eco-friendly.
This Earth Day, let us resolve to consciously move towards a better and greener planet.
