The Avengers are surely a bombastic lot; charismatic, boisterous, eye-catching, and at times, humorous. Although they’ve had their individual differences occasionally, they function as a well-oiled unit, destroying their enemies and more often than not leaving a trail of destruction in their collective wake. But what if they were pitted against one another with no sides to choose. In other words, what if they happened to engage in a game of poker? In this article, we look at how the Avengers would fare against each other at poker.
1. Iron Man
Tony Stark, with his charming, pompous, and sharply smart persona would play a good hand at poker. With his superfluous ways, he would engage everyone in dialogue, trying to gauge each of his opponents’ strengths and weakness. It would be interesting to see how Tony would fare without his trusted aide J.A.R.V.I.S, although his arrogant, impulsive and overconfident ways might prove to be his downfall.
2. Captain America
The Captain would certainly play poker with skill, considering his understanding of the respective mind-sets of the team members. Due to the fact that he shuns the limelight and is modest by nature, it wouldn’t be hard for him to slink into the background while the others openly grind it out. This would help him bring the game to his favour, although his moral-centeredness might not help him much here.
- Black Widow
Natasha Romanoff was born to play poker. Trained in the art of espionage, she would use all her powers in tilting the game towards her favour. With a natural poker-face, her deadpan expression would reveal absolutely nothing, leaving the team to scratch its collective head in confusion and nervousness. Due to her dark past, her subterfuge skills would aid her immensely, and combined with her fearlessness, she would gain an upper hand in the mental battles. A strong contender, this one.
Thor wouldn’t take poker too seriously; and who can blame him? He was born centuries ago, comes from the mystical world of Asgard, is a GOD, and hence without a doubt would find card games like poker, or any games in fact, ridiculous. He would sit in the background quietly admiring Mjolnir, or flexing his robust biceps while the others battled it out. Considering his tactical acumen, one dare say he would be good at poker. If only he bothered though…
Apart from the fact that he’s really skilled with a bow and arrow, Clint Barton is just a normal guy possessing average intelligence. Considering his mighty foes, he really would have to up his gameplay to stand a chance. Not cunning or shrewd, Hawkeye has plenty of heart, but whether it would help at poker is something one isn’t too sure of.
Bruce Banner, having had a tough day of work at the lab, would join the party late. On seeing that he was dealt a bad set of cards, he would get a minor headache, which would soon turn into a raging firestorm, and before he knows it, he’s turned into the green hulking monster. Thanks for ruining the game, Bruce!
- Nick Fury
The S.H.I.E.L.D director, with his razor-sharp tongue and frank manner, calls it like he sees it, which would definitely make the rest of the members uneasy. His manipulative skills are spot on, and hence he would take a more detached, calculating approach when dealing with others, willing to cut people deeply in order to achieve his goals. A true poker player.
