Stand-Up Comics You Should Definitely Follow

“Laughter is the best medicine” is a saying which we all have heard of. Most of us would always come across people who are fond of jokes. Except for a few odd (read weird) individuals, all of us like humour and would prefer humorous friends and even humorous life-partners.

Stand-up comedy is a comic style in which a comedian performs in front of a live audience, usually speaking directly to them. The performer is commonly known as a comic, stand-up comic, stand-up comedian, or simply a stand-up. The stand-up comedy in India has grown multifold in the last few years. The English-speaking audience of India has acquired a taste for stand-up comedy influenced by the West and the comics too have shown immense talent in catering to the high demand.

  1. Biswa Kalyan Rath:

Biswa Kalyan is an Indian stand-up comedian and YouTuber. He is known for the YouTube series, Pretentious Movie Reviews where he reviews Bollywood films along with fellow stand-up comedian Kanan Gill. He is also an IIT Kharagpur graduate and an ex-Oracle employee. He is undoubtedly my favourite among all the others, simply because of the raw nature of his comedy.

  1. Kenneth Sabastian:

Born into a middle-class family and raised in different cities of India helped the 25-year-old Kenneth Sebastian develop a keen sense of observation of culture, people and stereotypes, all of which have found its way into his comedy. A graduate from an art school, he dabbled in painting, music and filmmaking with an editors credit on a feature film before he found his true calling in the form of stand-up comedy. Having performed in over 500 shows in the last five years, written and hosted a show on Comedy Central that completed one season and having released four comedy specials online along with India’s first sci-fi comedy web series, Kenneth is well on his way to change the face of comedy in India.

  1. Zakir Khan:

 

Zakir Khan is an Indian stand-up comedian, writer and presenter. In 2012, he rose to popularity by winning Comedy Central’s India’s Best Stand Up Comedian competition. He has also been a part of a news comedy show, On Air with AIB. Watching Zakir perform is pretty much like sitting in the comfort of your own living room with your friends and you have this one extremely funny guy who’s pulling out hilarious stories one by one. Zakir talks about his relationship with his Mom, Dad, his dynamics with the world during his childhood, teenage and adulthood – and one can relate to it easily because at some point in life it has happened with you too!

  1. Sanjay Manaktala:

 

Sanjay was born in New York, USA and later moved to Los Angeles, California when his father got transferred to Air India. After graduating from college, Sanjay started working in IT and Consulting in the US, as well as doing comedy on the side as a hobby. He relocated to India in 2010 and has since shifted his focus to stand-up comedy while also working with Accenture as a part-time consultant. In June 2010, Sanjay formed a performing group, The Polished Bottoms, along with other stand-up comedians Sundeep Rao and Praveen Kumar. Popular for his IT-Guy videos and his famous Accent. His comedy is mostly around the IT scene in India and overseas and the differences between how things are here in India and abroad.

  1. Daniel Fernandes:

Based in Mumbai, Fernandes regularly performs at comedy clubs including Canvas Laugh Club, The Comedy Store, Blue Frog and High Spirits. In his comedic material and interviews, Fernandes is known to cover Indian social issues including free speech, student suicide, the death penalty and marital rape. He collaborated with several Indian stand-up comedians including Gursimran Khamba, Aditi Mittal, Biswa Kalyan Rath, Sundeep Rao, Radhika Vaz, Abish Mathew and Kanan Gill. His humour is message oriented and you not only laugh hard but also go home with a new perspective on things.

 

  1. Abish Mathew : 

Abish Mathew is one of the most experienced and unique comedians in the country. His performance is littered with funny original songs, silent enacted solo sketches, online shows, improv and stand-up that keeps his style of comedy fresh and thoroughly entertaining. Abish has performed as a headliner comic for comedy companies like Weirdass Comedy, The Papa CJ Comedy Company, East India Comedy, Schitzengiggles and many more. He is popular on YouTube as Son of A-Bish.

 

  1. Manish Tyagi:

 

Manish Tyagi used to be a Commander in the Indian Navy. He then decided to become a standup comedian. Manish lives in the NCR and completed his studies in 1988 from the pink city of India, Jaipur. An officer and a gentleman who was forced into singledom at 48, he has some very funny tales to tell from his life experience. Part of many renowned Comedy Clubs and having performed at different venues, his humour is going to make you spin with laughter and intelligence.
